Virtualbox Guest Additions Workaround

Oracle’s Virtual Box guest additions are meant to improve performances, usability and to sync a guest VM with its host.

What if we would like to change the date of a VM for testing purpose? That change will be immediately overwritten by the guest additions services running and it prevents any basic configuration drift.

A quick and easy workaround without removing the guest additions is just stopping guest additions service and then restart it after the test and PowerShell can help us to automate this process:

This script resets the date 60 days before and restarts all services stopped. Then finally it restarts virtual box guest additions.

In this case, the test was to start a stopped service with a different date from the system.
